I’m finally writing again!

Hello to all of you fantastic people!

Here we go with yet another yearly update, and I can finally say… Yes, I’m writing The Wind Spinner! Don’t get too excited though, haha. It’s been about one week of solid writing. It feels so refreshing to break out of that writer’s block though!

My writing process is definitely that of the gardener - I have a very vague idea of where I want the story to go, then I just let that seedling grow and write with an organic flow. As you can imagine, that means I do backtrack a lot and change plot lines constantly. It sounds maddening, I know, and um… it is, in the best way possible.

I must admit that I did take a break from the world of the Wandering Tribes for a while and focused on another manuscript of mine. It’s another fantasy story that I started when I was 14 years old, and it has evolved over and over and over again (because I’m 40 now, oh dearie me). This is definitely a story I’d love to share with the world at some point too, but I want to focus on The Wind Spinner for now.

I really must thank all of you who have continued to write to me. I cherish every single one of those messages, and each one brings such a warm glow to my heart. With permission, I am sharing a particularly delightful moment from 2025 with a dear reader in Canada, who is also named Jessie! She chose my book as her book club read, and handcrafted Water Spinner-themed bookmarks for her friends. I got all teary-eyed when she sent me this beautiful picture (do remember that I self-published The Water Spinner thinking that about thirty family/friends would read it, and that would be that). Look at what a lovely group they are! Thank you all so much for allowing me to share this memory. It truly meant so much to me. :)

In other updates, I’m still planning on a professional audiobook and will be looking for a narrator soon. I’m also thinking of participating in local festivals and conventions in Washington state so I can basically toss my paperbacks at people and hope they stick. ;)

Otherwise, life is full of work (I’m a family doctor and damn, is it busy), beautiful moments with family/friends, so very many trips and travels, a hell of a lot of computer gaming, a hell of a lot of reading, pumping iron (strength training is life-changing!), and precious, cozy moments with my husband and cat.

I hope all of you are finding joy in life’s little moments, and thank you, as always, for your time. :)

Happy reading!

Jessie

Updates (but no second book yet - I’m sorry!)

Hello!

It seems I’m in the habit of providing yearly updates around this May-June timeframe, so here we go again!

Let me first start with this: no, sadly, I haven’t made much progress with the second book, The Wind Spinner. There are several reasons… writer’s block is the main one. And I still have a stressful, rather all-consuming job in the healthcare field (for which I’m thankful, as I do love my job, but it saps my creative energy).

I’ve shared my frustrations with my family regarding my lack of progress. I get the same advice: “Take your time. You don’t want to rush this. You should be writing for you, not for anyone else.”

It’s sound advice. Excellent advice. But I still feel so guilty, because I know my little circle of readers has been waiting years upon years for the next installment.

Thank you for reading The Water Spinner. Thank you for your ratings, reviews, and messages. I’m still flabbergasted that people are reading this humble creation of mine, five years after publication. I promise I will try my best to continue writing, and I appreciate your patience so very much!

In other news, the AI-voiced audiobook did not do well. I’m glad I tried out the service, but I’ve made the decision to remove the audiobook entirely. Once I’ve amassed the dedicated funds, I can hire a voice actor to do the deed!

Lastly - I have no idea whether people will find this interesting or not, but now I feel like blabbing - I’m going to find another platform for advertising. I’ve tried a couple of different advertising services, and found Facebook/Instagram to be the best fit. I’ve used FB/Insta for years, but I quit Facebook recently (in a fit of social-media-fatigued-rage, might I add), so I will be looking for another service. I really appreciate those of you who have told your friends and family about The Water Spinner, because word-of-mouth advertising is most meaningful. :)

That’s all for now. Feel free to message me through this site - I love receiving your messages! I hope all of you are staying safe and healthy, and living some kind of beautiful life. ;)

With love,

Jessie

Audiobook now available!

Hello friends!

Several months ago, Kindle Direct Publishing extended an invitation to partake in their Virtual Voice beta. Basically, they offered to turn my book, The Water Spinner, into an audiobook for free if I used their virtual voice software. I know that there are very divisive thoughts regarding the use of AI to generate audiobooks, and I genuinely understand the arguments against, and for, this kind of technology.

For me, I simply looked at this invitation as an opportunity to make my book more accessible to those who prefer to listen to their books. As an amateur author, I have struggled with the thought of investing thousands of dollars into an audiobook, so when this Virtual Voice opportunity arose, I was really happy to try it out!

I selected the AI voice based on input from several close family members and friends, and then spent dozens of hours listening through the audiobook to make sure it sounded as polished as possible. This was -not- an easy task. I created two different languages for my book, and I had to go through and reset the pronunciation of all of those words to convey the sounds I wanted. I also had to make slight adjustments to the actual text of the book to make the listening experience a smooth one (for example - one of the minor characters has a stutter, and I couldn’t make the AI voice reproduce a stutter no matter how hard I tried, so the stutter is not present in the audiobook).

With all that said, I’m really, truly excited to have an audiobook version available!

Thank you all so much for spreading the word about The Water Spinner. Somehow, I still have people reading my book every single day, and this fact never ceases to amaze me. From the bottom of my heart, thank you my dear, wonderful readers (and listeners)!

Hugs upon hugs,

Jessie

An update for my dear readers…

First of all, I want to express my profound thanks. The lovely, warm reception for The Water Spinner has been a dream come true! Thank you deeply, from my humble heart to yours.

I’ve received many questions regarding the status of the next book. I’m downright flattered by the eagerness to reach for the next installment, but I must apologize profusely, because I feel like I’ve let you down by not having the next book ready. The plan has always been to create a full series of books. However, other priorities have dominated my life since publishing The Water Spinner in November 2020: namely, my job as a family physician. I have been extraordinarily busy during the COVID pandemic and in its aftermath. This has left little room for creativity, and I must admit that I’ve had a horrible streak of writer’s block for the past few years.

So, I felt that all of you deserved this update. I have some parts of The Wind Spinner written, but I still have a long ways to go with the creation of new characters and the overall direction of the plot. I hope that I can try to fit in more writing time this year, especially since your appreciation of The Water Spinner is so moving and inspiring.

I am terribly sorry for the long wait. Thank you all again for your patience and dedication.

Much love,

Jessie
